Organic gardening in hydroponics – The root system

By: The urban gardener
Posted: Oct 22, 2009

Plants, growing in the containers, will develop two types of the roots: the upper one, which will uptake plant nutrients from the upper part of the medium; and the lower roots, which will reach the lava rock part of the growing medium.

The upper root system is primary; it includes web-like thin roots that look similar to those that develop in the plants grown in the standard soil. They absorb multiple nutrients, thus ensuring the flourishing of a plant and its normal growth. The lower roots that are secondary will grow in the lower part of the medium (which can be lava rock, sand, gravel, perlite or pumice). These look typically to the hydroponically grown plants: long, rope-like, and stringy. These roots mainly absorb water; in addition, they receive much oxygen between watering cycles, which leads to the improved nutrients metabolism and faster growth.

These days hydroponics gardening gains more and more popularity in different parts of the world. More and more people become fascinated with this way of plants growing. Due to the constantly increasing interest in hydroponics, new methods and techniques of this gardening type appear. They are all aimed at the easing of the process of plants growing, improving the fruits, vegetables, and greens quality and taste, as well as at the making the whole process as eco-friendly as possible. Indeed, the new techniques try to solve the problem of hard-to-dispose used materials (as rockwool) and chemically-laden water and other wastes. Moreover, the primary goal of today hydroponics is to use exclusively organic materials, which offer the benefits in the crops quality and work of a gardener.

Not so long time ago gardeners were amazed by such hydroponics methods as Nutrient Film/Flow Technique, Ebb and Flow, Aeroponics, and even Semi-Organic Hydroponics. These days the leader of this gardening is Totally Organic Hydroponics, which major benefit is the possibility to grow 100% pure organic garden plants.

An Alternative Way of Gardening: The Organic Garden

Article by Hank Gordon

A lot of people seem to think that an organic garden is just for hippies and vegetarians. They think it is a difficult and hard way to grow vegetables and flowers while in fact they could not have been further from the truth. Having an organic garden is not difficult at all and it certainly is not just for hippies and vegetarians. When you know that most organic fertilizers are made from animal products you will understand that vegetarians need to be very careful with organic gardening.

Owning a organic garden is not hard at all the only thing where you should be aware of is that you do not use synthesized products. You can use normal seeds and plants they do not need to be organic at all. The only seeds you can not use are genetically modified seeds.

The same people who think that having an organic garden makes you a hippie also often think that your organic garden needs to be animal friendly. Well most gardeners also those who have an organic garden are not always the greatest friends of the local wildlife. And be honest would you be, when your carefully grown crops are being eaten by some rabbits?

There are all kind of gardeners and those that have a organic garden will never use chemicals or pesticides but some are known to shoot a rabbit occasionally, to scare it away or to eat it. A more natural meal is hard to find.

Is an organic garden the same as a natural garden?

A natural garden does not exist, every garden is in fact artificial when you are the one that decides what to grow and at what place in contrary to nature where nothing is planned. a organic garden is not a natural garden if we have land where we let nature do its thing we usually do not call it a garden we call it wasteland. In our gardens we like to decide what are considered weeds and what we consider to be plants or flowers and a organic garden is no different. If our organic garden is suffering from drought you would be crazy not to water those carefully planted flowers and vegetables. As you can see an organic garden also takes some unnatural growing methods.

Vegetarians who own a organic garden should be aware that many of thefertilizers and other organic garden products contain animal products like fish oil, leather and bone. They need to read all the ingredients on these products.

Although it is not necessary to call your garden an organic garden a very good and “natural” way to control bugs and pest is to mix specific plants together, if you do some research you learn that by placing for example onions and carrots together you will reduce pests and insects. Sometimes you can even use certain weeds to repel bugs and pests. You can also use insects like ladybugs to reduce louse, the ladybugs eat the louse and your organicly grown roses will be more beautiful then ever.

Organic gardening – General Notes on Pest Control Approaches in horticulture

By: The urban gardener

Pest Control Approaches

Chemical horticulture fights off invasive pests with specific insecticides. They may be effective and fast-working at the beginning, but their long-term use may result in the raise of the insects resistant to the used insecticide. To kill those, more efforts will be needed, and the use of the different and stronger chemicals may be necessary. Moreover, killing enemies in the garden, any insecticide will inevitably eliminate predator insects (natural control bugs). And their lack will cause multiplying of the harmful pests. Consequently, a gardener will have to search for some other options to defeat the invasive populations.

Organic horticulture, on the other hand, offers pests control through the studying and understanding their life cycles and peculiarities, as well as through the combined use of such methods as:

-           plants selection (pests and disease resistant plants are chosen for a garden);

-           companion plants growth (planting those crops that fight off pests and insects);

-           annual changing of the plants location to disrupt the reproduction cycles of the invasive species;

-           the use of row covers during the periods of pests migration;

-           employing insects traps to reduce the population of the pests;

-           increasing the number of predator insects and beneficial organisms.

In addition, organic gardeners usually allow some pests to live in the garden, carefully controlling their level though.

All of the mentioned methods have also additional benefits in the organic garden, as fertilization, soil protection, pollination, season extension and water conservation, despite of the fact that their influence and results usually take some time to become obvious. To sum it up it is possible to say that biological and organic pest control can be constituents of the integrated pest management (IPM). Nevertheless, the latter can also utilize chemical pesticides to eliminate harmful insects, although these do not belong to the biological or organic means.

Soil

Soil control and management are the important things in gardening. They offer the possibility to keep the garden healthy and strong, which is the key factor in the prevention of diseases and pests invasion onto the plants. One of the ways to success is providing the garden with humus and organic matter.

Organic gardening – General Notes on organic horticulture Organic gardening systems

Organic horticulture employs the crucial principles of organic agriculture for the successful herbs, fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants growing. These principles concern the management of pests in the garden, soil composition and conservation, etc.

General Notes

Mulches, Double Digging, compost, Vermicompost, cover crops, mineral supplements and manures are the main constituents of the soil mixture in this kind of gardening in contrast to the commercial farming. Organic horticulture expects to minimize the risk of insects, fungi, and diseases development with the help of maintaining the high quality of the soil. Nonetheless, sometimes it is still necessary to use insecticidal soaps and sprays, pheromone traps, or other pest-control means, created especially for organic farmers.

Experts define five fields of horticulture:

-           olericulture, which stands for the production and marketing of vegetables;

-           pomology that means the production and marketing of fruits;

-           floriculture, which is the production and marketing of floral crops;

-           and finally, post harvest physiology that studies and practices the preservation and maintaining of the quality of horticultural crops

All these areas can utilize the key principles of organic gardening.

Organic horticulture employs the methods and uses data, which have been collected for thousands of years. Generally speaking, this type of gardening is based on the natural, long-term processes and eco-friendly, global approaches, in contrast to horticulture, based on the use of chemicals that speed up the processes and aim at the separate results and reductionist strategies.

Organic gardening systems

There exist various formal organic gardening systems that utilize peculiar methods. They are listed among the general organic standards, but are more specific than them. For example, Rudolf Steiner developed the so-called biodynamic farming. Masanobu Fukuoka, the Japanese writer and farmer, practiced Natural Farming, based on the so-called no-till system for the small-scale production of grain. Finally, intensive and biointensive techniques and SPIN Farming (Small Plot INtensive), developed in France, also belong to the small-scale gardening methods.

A garden in a container or growing box provides healthy, organic, and highly nutritional food. Moreover, it is also the means to share one’s experience, to improve local economy, and to offer better and more sustainable way of living. A small raised bed garden of 32 square feet is capable of supplying tasty, healthy, and organic greens to a family, requiring, at the same time, less water and fewer nutrients if it is based on the postulates of bio-intensive planting and square foot gardening.

In addition, the existing garden can be improved with the help of composting or vermicomposting. These methods allow getting the best organic fertilizers by reusing organic matter, which provides necessary nutrients to the organic garden. Besides, compost and vermicompost are always an easy way to improve the results.

Let Gardening Magazines inspire your creativity

Article by Dan Mellow

Whether you’ve just caught the gardening bug or have taught generations of fellow gardeners how to plow and harvest, you probably have scoped out the dozens of gardening magazines on the rack more than once. Established gardeners have their favorites delivered to their street or virtual mailbox.

If you’re new to this satisfying hobby, you may have no idea of the breadth and wealth of information just waiting for your perusal. From weekend planting projects to detailed instructions on grafting cactuses, gardening magazines offer information that covers everything you want to know to make your garden grow. Some offer general knowledge, others emphasize how-to topics while yet another focuses on organic gardening. So how do you go about choosing a few magazines that will best help you achieve your goals?

What first sparked your interest in gardening? Maybe your neighbor’s bountiful vegetable garden, neatly laid out in terraced redwood boxes got you thinking. Perhaps you just purchased a new home that definitely needs some landscaping to replace the plain dirt and cement vista seen from the living room and street. If you have a single goal you’d be happy to complete this spring or summer, what would it be?

Let’s say you’d be delighted to grow a few of your favorite vegetables and herbs, but your space is confined to a small patio or balcony. There are gardening magazines that specialize in small gardens. To do a through investigation before actual planting, you should check out the organically oriented gardening magazines. Hydroponic growing may also suit your situation.

What you need to do is browse the selection of topics available both on the newsstand and online. Many gardening magazines appear in print and on the web. Gardening websites have archives of past issues and feature articles, free for your reading pleasure and education. You’ll find gardening tips, photo galleries and step-by-step DIY projects. Once you get started, it’s easy to see that you can fulfill your gardening goals, no matter how simple or specialized they might be.

Now your problem is to focus – unless you have time to burn, try to focus on the information you need this year. Experienced gardeners advise the beginner to start small and build on that accomplishment. This approach makes it far more likely you’ll complete your first project with enjoyment and satisfaction. Next year you’ll be prepared to tackle more, for example how to protect your garden from pests which you can read about at Gardening Scarecrow Sprinkler

Once you’ve checked out a sizable sample of available gardening magazines, you’ll find several that appeal to your sense of style and that contain relevant content. However, once you’ve got one project successfully under your gardener’s belt, your list of favorites may grow exponentially. There’s no telling what may happen to your magazine budget!

The Values Of Organic Gardening

By: Jeremy S. Abrahamson
Posted: Jan 09, 2010

Organic gardening has been around for decades already and many people have been reaping the benefits of this method of gardening.  Organic gardening is a method of cultivating botanicals in such a way that there is no use of chemicals or substances that can bring harm to the environment and to the end user, which are the people.

In common or traditional gardening, pesticides and herbicides are added to the plants and soil to prevent pests such as insects and herbs from destroying the crops, unlike organic gardening. The use of these pesticides, herbicides and even some fertilizer can cause numerous conditions, illnesses and sickness in many people who consume the treated fruits, vegetables and food items. These have been brought to the attention of many people in many different organic gardening magazines.

Organic gardening assures us that the environment does not receive any chemicals or deadly substances that can stay on the earth or sol for a longtime. Not using chemicals to prevent pests from bothering the crops can help the environment become less of a hazard to the people and more of a bountiful earth from which we can gather safe food. It is not only the people who benefits from the lack of chemical elements in the soil due to not using harmful pesticides and fertilizers, animals and other native species of plants in the area where organic gardening is promoted will flourish.

Safety For The People

Organic gardening promotes fewer chemicals in the food that we eat. This in itself is already a great help for most of the human race. Having food that is not tainted with deadly chemicals to make them look better, organic gardening has proven to be very beneficial for us, the consumers.

In the process of producing food and it reaching the consumers, we should not also forget that there are other people who will also benefit from organic gardening. These people are not just the consumers but also the workers who may be exposed to harmful chemicals when their employers do not practice organic gardening.

Farmers and workers exposed to the harmful chemicals in the pesticides and fertilizers often get sick or develop fatal conditions. The benefits that we achieve in practicing and supporting organic gardening methods far outweigh the benefits of using deadly chemical mixtures to eliminate unwanted pests. Organic gardening can help to lengthen the world’s life span and help make it more productive in the long run.

Garden centers – the best help you can get for your garden

Article by Stompie Smith

Gardening is one of the most interesting hobbies you can have. If this is your choice then you might need some help when taking care of your garden and if you want to do it properly you should definitely use the help of garden centers. Those are the places where you can find everything you need and even things you didn’t think you needed but will come in handy. So how exactly can a place like that be helpful?

1. Seeds – One of the most obvious things you can find in garden centers is seeds. When we talk about variety, garden centers have the biggest. You can literally walk around for hours choosing different seeds to plant in your garden. Whether you are looking for winter plants or plants of specific colors you can find them all in there. Even if you can’t see the ones you are looking for or you need a recommendation, all you need to do is ask.

2. Tools – Need a shovel? No worries, you can find so many different types of shovels that it will be hard to choose just one. If you are new to gardening, then you will be surprised how many different tools you can choose from. There are tools that you probably didn’t know existed. You will be surprised how helpful the garden centers can be when it comes to tools.

3. Furniture – Without a doubt, the furniture is one of the most needed things for a garden. It is kind of pointless to make a beautiful garden and not put some furniture in it so you can sit and enjoy it. It is a good idea to buy a table, some garden chairs and maybe a bench swing which is perfect for resting.

4. Fertilizer – If you really want to take care of your plants, you will need a fertilizer. What better place to get it from than garden centers? Visiting one will help you find the best fertilizer for your plants and if you are not sure which one you should get, you can always ask for help.

5. Tips – Yes, visiting a garden center is not only about shopping. The people who work in those centers are experienced gardeners and you will be able to get some really good advices and tips from them. This is the place to be especially if you are new to gardening and know almost nothing about it. Over time you will definitely become a professional, just don’t forget to listen to every word those people tell you about gardening and follow their advices.

As you can see, garden centers are perfect for getting all the supplies you might need for your garden from seeds to furniture. However, garden centers are not simply superstores but they are places where you can get some very useful information regarding your garden.

The Danes have a word for garden centers and it is Om havecentre. If you want to find the best one, simply click on the link. The website is in Danish, but you can use Google Translator to understand it better. Trust me, It’s worth it. More about garden centers you can read here.
